King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicates

MADRID - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced on Monday that King Juan Carlos had decided to abdicate after almost 39 years on the throne.
The 76 year-old will be succeeded as Head of State by his son Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbon, the Prince of Asturias and the heir to the throne.
Rajoy announced that King Juan Carlos would explain his decision to thee nation later in the day.
