With intact theaters, inns, temples and gates, the ancient bazaar in Shaxi is the only well-preserved example of its kind along a famous ancient tea trade route that connects the region with Tibet and southeast Asia. The World Monuments Fund, an international fund for the protection of world heritage sites, announced in 2001 that the ruins of the ancient bazaar in Shaxi was added to the 2002 list of internationally significant sites.
