Newborn dies after being dragged through hospital hallway

A newborn baby died at the Women and Children Medical Care Center in Luoyang City, Henan province after dragged for more than 10 meters while still attached to its mother by the umbilical cord, Xinhua News reported on Friday.

The mother, surnamed Shang, was being moved through the hospital by wheelchair to an operating room to receive a cesarean when she gave birth to the baby in the hallway on Jan 2, said the hospital managers.

The hospital staff did not notice that Shang had given birth and proceeded to push her down the hall with the baby dragging on the floor.

The baby's father, surnamed Pan, requested compensation of 200,000 yuan ($32,000), but the hospital, which admitted their negligence and apologized, only agreed to pay 5,000 yuan.

The city health department has launched an investigation on this case.
