VANCOUVER - Two days before the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, 30 athletes were banned from competing due to positive tests, IOC spokesman Mark Adams revealed here on Wednesday.
In the latest World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report on Wednesday, Adams said at a daily press briefing that there is no further detailed information of the athletes.
"One thing that WADA did tell us today is that 30 athletes have been prevented from coming to the Games because of testing positive," Adams said.
Adams said IOC is in the process of establishing a new commission to investigate the role of an athlete's entourage in cases of doping.
"Clearly an athlete who is caught doping will very often not be acting on his or her own self (including coaches, trainers and medical staff)."
"We really do need to check up on people who are surrounding athletes and quite often making a good living out of it as well," Adams said.
Adams confirmed that IOC will monitor the illegal betting on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, but will not be worry about it.
"During Beijing Olympic Games, we decided to strengthen monitoring processes, using FIFA's (Soccer's international governing body) system."
"We don't think the Olympic Games is under significant threat for illegal betting," Adams said.
