Nankai professor receives Canadian Governor General's Award

David Johnston, the Canadian Governor General, handed out the Governor General's Award to Yang Lingxia, a professor at Nankai University, in Beijing on Oct 30, chinadaily.com.cn reported. The awarding ceremony was presided over in Beijingby Zhao Pu, Canada's ambassador to China, and the event marked the first time the medal was awarded in the Chinese mainland to a professor in the field of social sciences in a higher education institution.

The Governor General usually grants the award to academicians - in a foreign country during his overseas trips - who have made an outstanding contribution to society.

Yang was selected for her work in promoting research on Canada and initiating academic communication activities between China and Canada. She has published many works on Canadian literature and history.

Yang is also the first doctoral supervisor in the Chinese academic field to tutor doctoral students majoring in Canadian History, and she took on the role of president of the Association for Canadian Studies in China last year.

Nankai University - located in Tianjin - is China's most important center for research on Canada, and it is also China's first higher education institution that is allowed to grant doctoral degrees in a Canadian History major.
