Xiamen to develop seawater desalination industry to produce drinking water

The Xiamen Development and Reform Commission held an “Experts Symposium on the Development of Xiamen City’s Seawater Desalination Industry” on November 9th. Leaders and experts from the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Oceanic Administration, the Institute of Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization, SOA (Tianjin), and Tsinghua University attended the meeting.

The per capita water resource supply in Xiamen is 340 cubic meters per person, which is far less than the International standard of 1,700 cubic meters per person. At present, local water resources and water diversion from outside river basin (Jiulong River of Zhangzhou) are the main sources of Xiamen’s water supply. Among which, water diversion from outside river basins accounts for more than 70% of the whole public water amount in Xiamen.

During the meeting, experts expressed their confidence in the development of Xiamen’s seawater desalination industry and gave advice on the construction of Xiamen’s seawater desalination demonstration project.
