The central government designated the Fuzhou-Xiamen coastal corridor as one of the first nine National Electronic & Information Industry Bases, and the electronics and information sector is one of the key factors contributing to Fujian's growth, creating 340 billion yuan ($55.6 billion) in sales revenue in 2011, the sixth highest in China.
The local government has taken steps to build three leading industrial chains - computer networking products, digital audio-visual equipment and mobile communication equipment - and offers assistance to emerging industries, such as software, semiconductor lighting, and optoelectronics. The authorities are also planning coastal information industrial bases and industrial parks in Fuzhou, Xiamen and other cities in Fujian, in a bid to promote industrial clustering.
