Taking advantage of the China Railway Express (CRE), Wenjiang has successfully transformed its horticulture industry over the past few years, turning it into one of the pillar industries in the area.

The total plantation area of Wenjiang's horticulture industry reached 200,000 mu (13,333.3 hectares) in 2010, accounting for 30 percent of the total area in Sichuan province. However, the rapid development resulted in rock-bottom prices.

Relying on the transformation of industry, Wenjiang reached out for international business opportunities. The CRE allows Wenjiang access to European markets, where there is a huge demand for flowers and trees.

In 2016, the first shipment of Wenjiang flowers and trees were transported to the Netherlands by train, saving 20 days in transit time and costing nine times less than sea transport.

The successful shipment roused the interest of more planters. Zhu Mingchuan, a flower grower in Wenjiang, visited Germany, Italy, and other European countries and saw the market prospects.

To meet the needs of the European market, flower growers in Wenjiang have started to produce simple, small, and high-value-added products such as plaited plants, bonsais, and green plants.

A 300 million euro ($344.64 million) order placed by a Dutch company is what started the export of flowers and trees from Wenjiang. Wenjiang strives to build the largest flower and tree export and import center in the country.

The first stage of the export-import industrial park is currently under construction and will begin operating by the end of this year, while the rest of the project will be finished in 2019.

The total export value of the horticulture industry has reached $4.6 million thanks to Wenjiang's new operation model. Villagers have become shareholders of the export-import industrial park, which will guarantee a considerable income and stimulate participation in the horticulture industry.
