A history of disappointments

This was the fourth time DiCaprio lost out. In 1994, he earned his first nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, playing a mentally-challenged child in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He was just 19 but lost out to Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive.

In 2005, he was nominated for his role in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator but by then the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had already shown prejudice against the actor. His performances in Romeo and Juliet, Titanic and Gangs of New York, all great in many critics' eyes, did not earn him a single nomination. That year, he lost to Jamie Foxx in his portrayal of Ray Charles for the film Ray.

In 2007, DiCaprio was nominated for Blood Diamond, and lost to Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland. He should have been nominated many more times, such as in 2006 for The Departed, in 2010 for Shutter Island.
