SHANGHAI - Shanghai plans to install more traffic cameras to decrease the number of deaths on the crowded city's roads, following a spate of fatal traffic accidents this year, local authorities said Wednesday.

More roadside cameras and police officers will be deployed on roads prone to accidents that result from congestion and speeding, Shanghai's traffic police chief Chen Zhikang said at a road safety meeting of the municipal government.

Chen also promised an overhaul of road signs, road safety facilities and all the tour buses and coaches that enter or exit Shanghai.

By October 18 this year, 710 people were killed and 1,361 injured in 1,599 road accidents in Shanghai, home to 23 million people, he said.

The worst one happened on late September 14, when a shuttle bus of a local electronics firm overturned in Pudong New District, killing half of the 24 onboard.
