Macao's MICE events down 19% in Q1

MACAO -- There were a total of 267 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) events held in Macao in the first quarter of 2011, 19.33 percent down from a year earlier, according to the figures released on Monday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The average duration of these events decreased by 0.4 day in the first quarter of 2010 to 2.1 days in the period with the total number of participants and attendees reaching 127,194, an increase of 42 percent year on year, according to the DSEC figures.

As regards subject of MICE events, the majority focused on Commerce, trade and management (119), IT and other technology (42), as well as Travel and tourism (24) in the period. Analyzed by type, most of the events were Corporate meetings (174), Government meetings (29) and Association meetings (28).

The figures also indicated that the majority (63 percent) of the exhibition organizers were local enterprises and 25 percent were from Hong Kong.

Moreover, 88 percent of the organizers had experience of organizing exhibitions in Macao. In the first quarter of 2011, total revenue of the exhibition organizers amounted to 2.1 million patacas ($262,500) and total expenditure was 3.2 million patacas.
