Auditors retrieve $3.9b misused funds

More than 26.7 billion yuan ($3.9 billion) of funds embezzled in 2007 was retrieved by October last year, the National Audit Office (NAO) said on Friday.

Thirty people have been arrested, charged or sentenced for misusing funds, and 117 have received Party and administrative disciplinary punishment, it said.

The State Council, or China's cabinet, conducted a national rectification drive targeting all problematic departments after the NAO said 29.4 billion yuan had been misused by 53 ministerial-level central government departments, and 17 billion misappropriated by their subordinates, in 2007.
