In the far view and sunlight, it is just like shining "water drops" on the surface, bringing activity, freshness and power. In the near sight, under the white cloud and blue sky, it is a beautiful and pretty painting. At night, the light on the wall and the river show the effect of waving water and the quiet atmosphere.

The "water cube" and "the National Stadium" (Bird's Nest) are respectively arrayed at both sides of northern part of middle axis in Beijing, together forming the integral historic and cultural figure of the city. "The National Stadium" is active and surprising; while the "water cube" is light, fresh, and quiet.

The perfect "Water Cube" design concept realization thanks to the reasonable adaption of external wall and roofing material - ETFE membrane material. Meanwhile, ETFE aired membrane structure system satisfies the demand of building physical propertes and function.

 

ETFE is a new chemical material, the combination of ethene and Four Fi ethene. It has the property of toughness, softness, transparency, anti-acid, and old age etc, also it may be recycled, is a new kind of environmental friendly material. It may work in high temperature; also the special coating prevents dust absorption. The membrane also self cleans. The double or multi-layer membrane composition air pillow enables a high heat work property. By the integrated analysis and practical test, "Water Cube" wall system integration heat transfer coefficient is 1.1W/M2.k, the roofing system integrated heating coefficient is 0.65W/M2.k. ETFE membrane has high transparency and radiation transparency. Meanwhile, the membrane surface adopts a different dense of glazing point, and may control and adjust room lighting.

Since the structure demand of the "Water Cube" , the roofing steel structure thickness is 7m, wall steel structure thickness is 3.4m. In and outside the steel structure are air pillows, namely roofing and wall are both double aired membrane structure system. Air pillow shape is different with steel structure shape, which regularly arranged in the roofing and wall surface arranged in irregular manner. In total more than 3000 air pillows with a total area of 100,000 sq m, the biggest air pillow area is 70 sq m; the largest span is 8.5m.
