The National Aquatics Center, which is also called the "water cube" and located inside Beijing Olympic Park, is one of the symbolic buildings for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games-the 29th Olympiad. The individual and distinctive design concept has made the water cube a shining point in this historic cultural city. The Aquatics Centeris located at the Beijing Olympic park. Its length and width both are 177m, with a height of 31m, covering a construction area of 62950 sq m, and a building area of 87283 sq m. The main structure adopts a tensible space polyhedron steel frame structure, and the whole structure possesses about 22000 steel bar component and 12000 joint points. It can accommodate 17000 spectator's seats, in which permanent spectator seats number around 6000, 11000 more seats will be provisionally added in the course of the Olympic Games. During the 2008 Olympic Games period, it will serve as the swimming, diving, water ballet, polo etc. competition field. After the competition it will then be converted into a comprehensive leisure center possessing internationally advanced level, such as swimming, movement, body building etc. The project is co-designed by China State Construction and Engineering Corporation, PTW Architects and ARUP from Australia, which showcase traditional Chinese culture and modern technology in a perfect combination. The profile adopts a traditional Chinese basic shape —the "square", simple and clear cube, as s basis of social theory. Water, is an active element, which is expressive. The light blue ETFE is aired into different bubbles, arranged in the wall and roofing. |
