Huang made the comments Tuesday morning during a meeting with family members of passengers on board the plane which vanished more than two weeks ago, leading to an unprecedented multinational search across the Asia Pacific region.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak made the announcement at an unscheduled press conference late Monday based on tracking data of British satellite company Insarmat.
Huang said the data did not include the northern corridor stretching from Thailand to Central Asia - and the plane might have flown up this corridor.
