MOSCOW - Kim Jong-il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), inspected the largest hydro power plant in Russia's Far East on Sunday, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Kim, who started his visit to Russia on Saturday, arrived at the Bureya hydropower plant where he inspected its operation and observed water discharge, the report said.

His special train stopped at the Novosibirsk railway station and was welcomed there by Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's representative in the Far Eastern Federal District Viktor Ishayev and Governor of the Amur Region Oleg Kozhemyako.

The DPRK top leader will travel to Ulan Ude, where he is expected to meet with Medvedev around mid-week, according to the report.

Kim visited Russia twice before. From July 26 to August 18, 2001, the DPRK leader traveled by train across Russia's territory from Vladivostok to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

His second visit to Russia was in August 2002, when the four-day trip to the Far East was aimed at studying the region's economic policy.
