Editor's note: South Sudan is preparing to declare independence on July 9. With the birth of Africa's newest country only months away, China Daily reporter Zhang Haizhou and photographer Cui Meng went to south Sudan. They visited the disputed Sudanese border region of Abyei, took a look at the big challenges south Sudan faces and interviewed some Chinese who are in south Sudan, including China's consul-general in Juba, South Sudan, peacekeepers and a China National Petroleum Corporation staff member.
