WASHINGTON - US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won caucuses in Wyoming on Saturday, according to the state party's website.

Romney, former Massachusetts governor, who is vying to become the country's first Mormon president, won six of the eight decided delegates chosen to determine Republican presidential candidate at the party's national nomination convention held later this year.

The other two decided delegates stands for former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson and California's House Representative Duncan Hunter. Although there are still four delegates undecided, Romney's victory is assured.

As the second state that held 2008 presidential caucuses, Wyoming has been largely ignored by candidates and media. To punish the Wyoming Republican committee's decision to move forward the caucuses date to Jan. 5, the Republican National Committee reduced the number of the state's delegates to the national nomination convention from 28 to 14, including two that will be chosen at a state convention in May.

The win was a morale boost to Romney, who ended at the second place in the Iowa caucuses, and is facing serious challenge in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8.

Romney visited Wyoming in August and November accompanied by three of his five sons.
