Chinese scholars are hoping to inject more "Chinese wisdom" into modern project management.

More than 200 experts and employees from government departments, universities, research institutes and enterprises gathered in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi province, for the 13th China Project Management Conference and Chinese Characteristics and Cross-Culture Project Management International Forum last weekend.

Hiroshi Tanaka, founder of the Japan Project Management Association, put forward the theory "What China can do and what China should do" in the field of project management.

Zhang Weihong, vice president of event host Northwestern Polytechnical University, said his university has become one of the important research bases with domestic and international academic impact in the field of project management.

The discipline is a management technology developed in late World War II and originating in the United States. During the 1960s its scope was limited to construction, defense and aerospace, but later achieved great success in the US "Apollo" program before sweeping the world.

During its development, two systems were formed. One is the International Project Management Association, based on European-led systems, and the other is the Project Management Institute, based on the US-led system.

Over the past 30 years, the two have played a positive role in promoting the modernization of international project management.

Ou Lixiong, secretary-general of the conference, said the event proposed the idea of creating a Chinese Project Management School in order to further promote technology development with Chinese culture and wisdom.
