Many Chongqing police officers were hailed as heroes during Bo Xilai's crackdown on organized crime which started in 2008. Zhou Yu, who headed Yuzhong district's Economic Crime Investigation Team and killed himself on Friday, was one of those officers. What has become of the others?

Wang Lijun: currently serving a 15-year prison sentence

Wang Lijun became Chongqing's deputy police chief in 2008, one year after Bo Xilai took office in the city. Together they initiated the "strike black" campaign to tackle organized crime, which led to the convictions of many well-known businessmen, including Li Qiang - who was also the second richest man in Banan district, Chen Mingliang - who was also a district legislator in Yuzhong - and Gong Gangmo, who also headed a local gang.

Wang Lijun's dramatic entry into the US Consulate General in Chengdu in Feb 2012 led to an investigation into his activities. He was later sentenced to 15 years in prison and deprived of political rights for one year after being found guilty of "bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking."

Tang Jianhua: expulsion from Party and dismissal from office

Tang Jianhua was commended on Feb 28, 2010 for his contribution to the crackdown on gang crime, and he became deputy chief of the city's public security bureau on the second day.

Tang was arrested in August 2012 for taking bribes and was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in Feb 2013. The investigation found that he had accepted more than 16.95 million yuan ($2.73 million) in bribes. Tang was expelled from the Party and also lost his position. He is awaiting the outcome of his appeal.

Xiong Feng: now "playing video games at work every day"

Xiong Feng was a police officer in Wanzhou district. He worked on the high-profile case concerning businessman and gang boss Gong Gangmo, and allegedly found out that lawyer Li Zhuang had instructed Gong to lie. Wang Lijun spoke highly of Xiong, saying he was an outstanding talent like no other in the police over the past 50 years. Xiong was later promoted to the rank of deputy chief of a local criminal police team.

But the fall of Wang Lijun also affected him and, in December 2012, the weekly journal Outlook quoted a lawyer as saying that he was playing video games at work every day.
