KUALA LUMPUR - A senior Malaysian sports official has confirmed badminton World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei has failed a doping test.
Malaysia's badminton association declined to identify the player while confirming Saturday that the B sample had backed up the positive finding of the A sample of a doping control from this year's World Championships.
The sports official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told The Associated Press that the player was Lee.
Lee, who won silver medals at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics, as well as at the 2011, 2013 and 2014 World Championships, faces a two-year ban from competition.
Malaysia's badminton association said the Kuala Lumpur-based Badminton World Federation would hold a hearing into the doping case.
