NANJING -- Wu Shengping walked away with the gold medal in the women's 10m platform diving competition at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center Natatorium on Saturday.

Wu shone throughout the competition, leading from the very first dive in the preliminaries to finish with 526.20 to win the title.

The 18-year-old finished the competition with a superb back two-and-a-half somersault with a one-and-half twists in a pike position to score 81.60.

Wu said she knew she was way out in front but tried to stay focused throughout the final.

"I kept a steady mind. I just tried to keep my dives solid. I knew as long as I performed like practice it was going to be OK." She said.

Because of short-sighted, Wu failed to tell whether her parents came to watch her performance, "They said they would come, but I didn't know."

Loh Zhiayi from Malaysia won the silver medal with 450.65, almost 80 points behind Wu. The bronze medal went to Mexican girl Alejandra Loza with 430.25.

The men take to the pool for the 3m springboard preliminaries at 10:00 on Sunday.
