Homo erectus is widely recognized as the ancestor of human beings. Besides Nanjing Man mentioned above, fossils of the subspecies of Homo erectus found in China also include Peking Man, Yuanmou Man, Lantian Man, and Wushan Man.

Peking Man lived 750,000 years ago and was discovered in Zhoukoudian, Southwest Beijing, in 1929. At the time, these were the oldest known human fossils and they fanned the flames for theories that all humans originated in China.
