E-town was designated a pilot for ecological, industrial space by China's Environmental Protection Ministry, Commerce Ministry, and Science and Technology Ministry in 2009 and has many ecology projects to beautify the area. There are five large ecological parks around E-town and a large amount of forests on about 40 percent of the space. It has also spent millions of yuan on 35 green programs, such as Nanhaizi Wetland Park, Beijing's largest of its kind and four times of the size of the Summer Palace area. It holds a nature reserve for elk and a natural landscape as an idea way to bring the forest to the crowded city.
