Lawrence Xu Yunjin Brocade Fashion Show

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2015-07-07 08:56

A Yunjin Brocade International Fashion Show directed by Lawrence Xu is set to feature at the Expo Milano 2015 Nanjing Week in Italy. It is the first all-yunjin show to feature in the fashion world.

The show will showcase 40 haute couture items made entirely of yunjin and combining a range of historical and fashionable elements.

The fashion show conforms to the Nanjing Week’s theme of “Mountain, Water, City and Forest” and blends traditional Chinese culture with art. This ancient fashion of the East will meet with the modern world of city fashion and play an important role in Nanjing Week’s promotional activities.

Nanjing yunjin brocade is a Chinese traditional silk handicraft with a 1600-year-old history. It is said to resemble colorful clouds, giving it the name of “yun” (cloud in Chinese) and “jin” (brocade). Yunjin is the finest skill in Chinese silk weaving and roughly only one inch per day can be produced, making it the most expensive fabric in the world.

The yunjin fashion show at Nanjing Week will showcase 20 types of yunjin styles featured in 40 dresses.

Lawrence Xu (formerly known as Xu Jianshu) graduated from the fashion design school of the China Central Academy of Craft Art and received further education in Paris. He was an apprentice of French designer Francis de Lenclos. His designs are always unique and feature a combination of western and Chinese elements. Western style cuttings with Chinese traditional elements make the dresses a mixture of western and oriental beauty.
