Whisky

Quality single-malt whisky in China commonly comes from abroad and its consumption has been treated as something of a Western hobby. Attaining whisky from around the world is growing interest of Chinese people given how varied its regions can be. Most ideas of the drink are commonly associated with its purity and international nature spun out of Scotland. Single-malt whisky can fetch various prices and comes in many different varieties which appeals to people looking for an alcohol which can be experimented with over time.

Given their appeal to this largely untapped market, whisky clubs have been popping up in more international cities like Beijing and Shanghai over the years; only more recently has Tianjin also picked up on the trend. Much like how golfing has exploded from the business class to a more open market of individuals in lower classes, so will single-malt consumption over time as people seek alternative alcohols. Not only is it a relatable cultural point when doing business, but the indulgence of fine liquors is an act which helps relax busy individuals while the smaller quantities keep away negative health ramifications. As everyone is well aware of, the consumption of copious amounts of alcohol tend to bring down the health of people. In this situation though, less means more, and less alcohol means the chance to spend that money on something of greater quality.

Acclimating to fine single-malt whisky isn’t always easy says Sylvia Kim, who manages her own golf training studio as well as a whisky club. "People can experience headaches after trying a single-malt whisky as their bodies are used to consuming fake liquors often sold at local bars." The strong taste of the alcohol can also be a slight deterrent for beginners which is surprising considering that baijiu is drunk as though it’s water. Strong tastes and introductory headaches aren’t going to keep away a growing group of enthusiastic proto-connoisseurs. While expats in Tianjin see a whisky club open and think, "Finally", the locals haven’t had any experiences with such establishments. They see the comfortable atmosphere, smoke-free environment, fine service, quality liquors; and they seek more. To many locals, they’re acquiring the tastes and making demands for superior products. While seeking real luxury products can take many forms from purses, clothing, shoes, makeup, etc; when it comes to food and drinks it can directly influence your health.
