Goran K Hansson, secretary general of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine and distinguished professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and Peter Libby, professor of Harvard University Medical School, were awarded honorary professorships by Shandong University on March 17.

Zhang Rong, president of Shandong University, presented the honorary professorship letters of appointment to the two foreigners. He said they are both distinguished academics in the field of atherosclerosis and had made outstanding achievements in that and related disciplines.

Zhang stated that Shandong University has a strong scientific research reputation in the cardiovascular field. He hoped that Professors Hansson and Libby would share their research achievements with everyone to actively engage in cooperation and exchange between Shandong University and world-renowned scientific research institutions. Dr. Goran K Hansson is a distinguished professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where he holds the chair of cardiovascular research in the department of medicine at Karolinska University Hospital. He is the secretary general of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, director of the Medical Nobel Institute, and vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation. Dr. Hansson´s research deals with immune and inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis, and he has received many awards, including the Anitschkow Prize from the European Atherosclerosis Society and the Distinguished Service Awards of the American Heart Association.
