Linuo Power Group signed an agreement with International Business Machine Corp (IBM) on Tuesday to jointly research crystalline silicon cells to improve the conversion efficiency of solar cells.
The two companies expect the conversion efficiency of monocrystalline silicon solar cells to improve 20 percent over current levels to about 18 percent in three to five years. Greater conversion efficiency will significantly lower the production costs of solar cells by at least 14 percent, the companies said.
A joint research platform will be established, led by IBM solar cell research scientist Harold J. Hovel, The initial research investment will be $20 million, with additional investments exceed $100 million in three years.
