Wuxi -- a pilot area for developing the internet of vehicles in eastern China's Jiangsu province -- is expected to turn the 1,200-square-kilometer urban area into an open experience ground for the IoV by 2022, according to Gao Yaguang, vice mayor of Wuxi.

Gao made the remarks at the news conference for the 2019 World Internet of Things Expo, or WIOT, which is set to kick off in the city on Sept 7.

Earlier in May Wuxi was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to be the nation's first pilot area for developing the IoV.

Wuxi started to work on the IoV sector in 2016 and established a comprehensive testing base for unmanned driving vehicles and IoV.

Over the past two years, the city has made major breakthroughs in the technical framework for the IoV, which was adopted by many auto companies, according to Gao.

"To date, Wuxi has 30 IoV application scenarios and is projected to have more than 100 in the future by improving infrastructure construction and enriching applications scenarios," she said.

"We hope to produce a national and international standard for developing the IoV and attract national major IoV elements to Wuxi via the testing base to form a sound IoV ecology," Gao added.

The 2019 World Internet of Things Expo has as its theme "integrated integration, intelligent connectivity".

Organizers said its 60,000-square-meter exhibition area will present cutting edge technologies in IoT communications, intelligent manufacturing and sensors, the consumer IoT, intelligent transportation and the IoV, the smart city and in smart education.

A total of 542 companies from over 30 countries and regions worldwide are expected to attend 27 activities during the four-day event, including 37 Global Fortune 500 companies.

A guide on the nation's first pilot area for the IoV will be published during the expo.
