For the first time in the tournament's history, fencers will compete on a stage mainly composed of a giant LED screen during the upcoming 2018 World Fencing Championships in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, which will run from July 19 to 27.
With an investment of 16 million yuan ($ 2.39 million), the LED screen stage covers a mammoth 900 square meters in total.
"It marks the first time that the technology will be applied in the world championships, and it was highly praised by the FIE," said Wang Haibin, president of the Chinese Fencing Association.
Differing from previous stages, which were covered with carpet, the stage will display the fencers'names, nationalities and scores throughout the competition, making it easier for the audience to enjoy the fencing action. The Wuxi New Sports Stadium, the venue for the competition, has been renovated strictly in accordance with International Fencing Federation (FIE) standards.
The championships will see around 1,370 top fencers from 108 countries and regions across the world competing for 12 gold medals in foil, epee and sabre events.
