Establishment of a screening center for lung cancer was suggested by six members of the Wuxi Municipal committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
According to the monitoring statistics from the Wuxi Disease Control and Prevention Center, a total of 16,000 local residents have been diagnosed with cancer and 12,000 local residents died of the disease in 2016. This means that 45 people were diagnosed and 32 died of cancer each day in 2016; six of those daily deaths were from lung cancer.
Three to four thousand new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in Wuxi every year. Lung cancer is the leading form of the disease among males and tops other cancers in death rate at more than 21 percent of the city's mortality rate.
If lung cancer can be diagnosed in an early stage, the survival rate can be greatly improved.
