A month after claiming top spot on a list of the world's fastest and most powerful computers, the Wuxi-made Sunway TaihuLight has been officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records at a ceremony held in Beijing on July 15, according to Wuxi Liyuan Economic Development Zone.
In June, the Sunway Taihulight became the first supercomputer in the world capable of performing 93 petaflops/s (quadrillions of calculations per second), with peak speed hitting 125.4 petaflops/s.
Developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC), the supercomputer is housed at Wuxi's National Supercomputer Center.
With all of its processors designed and made in China, the Sunway Taihu Light has helped the nation mark further achievements in several areas such as weather forecasting, aerospace, marine science and new materials.
The record marks China's breakthrough in the field of supercomputers, said Rowan Simons, the president of Guinness World Records in the region of Greater China.
