A fire broke out at a restaurant in Shuofang, Wuxi New District at 09:20pm on May 4. No casualties were reported.
The fire was extinguished by the restaurant workers before the firefighters arrived at the scene. Seven customers trapped on the second floor during the fire were rescued, the Wuxi Daily reported.
The fire first started in the kitchen and was soon noticed by the cook. The restaurant workers hurried to extinguish the fire but forgot to evacuate the customers upstairs.
The trapped customers were dining at a private dining room when the fire broke out. Heavy smoke blocked their escape route. In an attempt to prevent more smoke filling in the room, they used wet towels to insulate the gaps and called for help.
Firefighters eventually rescued them. No one was injured during the fire. The accident was caused due to the breakage of an oil pipe in the kitchen, according to a witness.
