The Yuquan district government launched the Shaomai Festival recently to promote traditions surrounding the specialty of shaomai (steamed meat dumpling) and Hohhot’s tourism at the same time.
The three-day campaign was put on to promote Shaomai Street and integrated activities such as a shaomai culinary contest, an exhibition on local culture, and workshops to learn how to make shaomai.

Shaomai is a popular snack originating from Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Hohhot's shaomai is often made with fillings of mutton, green onion, and ginger, which give it a distinctive flavor from those made of pork. It is a tradition to eat shaomai with a cup of tea.
