A reading club in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, attracted over a hundred book lovers at its third meeting May 11.
Started on World Book and Copyright Day, April 23, the Hohhot-based reading club was initiated by Lei Meng, a local TV host. Every Wednesday evening, groups of citizens who love reading swarm into the reading club. The remoteness of the site does not prevent book lovers from attending.
A professor from Inner Mongolia University shared his stories of reading since he was a teenage. Other attendees working in media, law and investment shared their feelings on reading or books.
There is never too much knowledge, Lei said, explaining his motivation to start this club. He and many of his friends wanted to read but did not have time. They initiated the reading club on Wechat and soon attracted many book lovers.
To date, the club has organized three meetings and drawn writers and scholars.
Envisaging the future of the club, Lei said he hopes more reading clubs of specific professions will be established to make Hohhot a city of readers. "The book club is free and open to all. I hope that the club attracts more citizens who love reading, and do not want it to be a small and enclosed circle,” he said.
