Highway
The total length of highways in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region by the end of 2012 reached 163,763 miles (263,551 kilometers), including 3,100 miles of express highways, 4,666 miles of class I highways and 14,092 miles of class II highways. Highways at class II or above levels reached 13.4 percent of total highway length in the region in 2012.
Roads at the first and secondary level totaled 74,559 miles, accounting for 45.5 percent of total road length in the region. There are asphalt roads connecting all villages and towns.
In 2012, total transportation volume by road was 233 million passengers, and total cargo volume was 329.98 billion tons.
Railway
There are several east-west railways, such as the Beijing-Tongliao Railway, Beijing-Baotou Railway and Baotou-Lanzhou Railway, connecting the autonomous region with Northeast, North and Northwest China. Manchuria and Erenhot are two continental cargo ports that connect to Russia and Mongolia, respectively, reaching to countries in Europe.
The national railway network in the autonomous region is co-administrated by the Hohhot railway bureau, Harbin railway bureau and Shenyang railway bureau. The main railways governed by the Hohhot railway bureau include the Beijing-Baotou, Baotou-Lanzhou and Jining-Erenhot railways.
In 2012, total cargo transportation volume in the autonomous region reached 683.79 million tons, including 598.12 million tons of coal.
Civil aviation
There are altogether 13 civil airports in the autonomous region and one utility airport in operation. The Alxa aviation shuttle pilot project and the Hulunbuir utility airport service project are proceeding smoothly. The construction site for Ulanqab Airport has been decided, and Zlantun Airport and Huolin Gol Airport are under construction.
In 2012, several airport projects were completed and put into use, including the blind landing system and airfield lighting system at Ulanhot Airport, the new navigating station project at Erenhot Airport, an extension project of the terminal and airfield at Erdos airport, and the renovation project of the terminal at Tongliao Airport. An airfield extension project is now underway at Ulanhot Airport.
Tourists traveling by plane to the autonomous region in 2012 reached 12.04 million, and cargo volume reached 60,281 tons.
The year also witnessed total cargo volume from all transport methods of 1.57 billion tons, including 530 million tons by railway and 1.25 billion tons by highway.
By the end of 2012, there were 4.9 million automobiles owned by residents.
