Central China's Hunan province is pursuing a greener agriculture through transformation and upgrading of its livestock and poultry industry, according to a waste to resource meeting held in Changsha county on Sept 5.
Vice governor of Hunan province Sui Zhongcheng attended the meeting and gave some instructions on seeking a coordinated development between production and environmental protection in the central Chinese province.
"The livestock and poultry industry is a key income generator for farmers, and can't be neglected due to the polluting problems it causes," Sui pointed out in his speech.
To salvage the situation, a scientific layout of farms shall be specified based on different functions, and attention will be given to the comprehensive utilization of waste from fowl and livestock products in order to protect the environment while ensuring the supply of meet and eggs.

Sui urged officials at all levels to perfect the environmental impact assessment system, put an end to pollution at source, strictly enforce the law and encourage the farmers to be responsible for the pollution.
In addition, new patterns of recycling agricultural wastes as resources would be put forward and should be included in the evaluation system for government performance.
Participants at the meeting embarked on a study tour to Jiahe Agriculture Stockbreeding Corp and Hunan Xingguang'an Agricultural Husbandry Co, located in Changsha county, both being demonstration sites for utilization of livestock and poultry wastes as resources.
