Nanyang has taken measures to promote compulsory education, including establishing 10 schools and refurbishing more than 60 schools.
The city's gaokao scores have been rising during the past several years, and this year 15.88 percent of local students scored high enough to receive offers from first-tier universities, a 10.82 percent growth from 2010.

Old-age insurance for urban and rural residents
In 2012, Nanyang established an old-age allowance system covering senior citizens both in urban and rural areas.
Statistics show that 4.59 million local residents are now covered by the allowance system, among which 1.32 million are above 60.
Guaranteed loans to promote entrepreneurship
Responding to the strategy of "innovation and entrepreneurship" put forward by the central government, Nanyang has used 3 billion yuan ($450 million) during the last five years to help more than 60,000 local residents pursue self-employment, which created more than 120,000 job opportunities at the same time.
During the past five years, the city has increased 550,000 job opportunities for urban residents, and 500,000 job opportunities for rural migrant workers, while the employment rate for university-educated workers in the Nanyang reached over 85 percent.
