Premier Li Keqiang visited a village in Handan, Hebei, on Friday, in order to discuss this year's wheat harvest with farmers.
The premier visited the fields and saw the farmers harvesting. He said that the rains during the last few days had affected the harvest, so that the teams have to work against time to guarantee the least amount of loss, and the maximum amount of grain.
He told the farmers that they could introduce improved varieties of wheat and scientific plantation. The wheat harvesting season started on Friday in Lujiazhuang village, Handan city, and it will last several days.
The harvesting areas cover 35.5 million mu and about 80,000 combine harvesters collect the wheat, and another one million seeders and other machines help with the harvest.
In addition, more than 3,000 teams have been dispatched to help migrant workers'families and families who have a shortage of people to help with the harvest and to plant corn.
An agricultural expert said that the rains will shorten the harvest season and force northern and southern cities to rush through the work. The expert added that the farmers need to make good use of sunny days to complete their harvest and try their best to plant the corn as soon as the wheat is collected.
Without the rains, the harvest peak would be expected to arrive on June 15 and all the harvesting would finish around June 25. |
