Last year, the Chinese government approved 11 regional development strategies. The plans included the Zhujiang River Delta, coastal area of Jiangsu Province, middle provinces and international tourism island of Hainan.

This year some major cities and areas will be included. The areas can be divided into 4 types: regions which will promote economic growth, comprehensive national power and international competency; regions which will help gear up international cooperation and opening up; regions which have potential to solve problems and develop; and regions which have potential to explore advanced regional development and management.

Now, plans for the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban circle and Chengdu-Chonging economic circle are underway.

An officer of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Land and Resources said Beijing will invest 100 billion yuan (US$14.6 billion) in land exploitation and reservation, focusing on new towns, major functional districts and industrial land in small towns.

The approval of collectively owned and used land will begin this year. The approval of house sites will also be promoted.

The general plan of Xiangtan City in Hunan Province has been approved by General Office of the State Council recently. It will govern its rural and urban areas based on reasonable population distribution to prevent blind expansion of the city.

Xiangtan City plans to invest 24 billion yuan (US$3.5 billion) in 128 projects covering infrastructure, energy, transportation, telecommunication, industrial parks, commerce, agriculture, tourism, education and cultural industry.

Guangxi has also set up the development framework and industrialization path for the next 10 years. The tasks include constructing a large scale industrial base, promoting recycling industry, building digital industry, building major industrial parks, restructuring state-owned enterprises, developing private companies and developing open economy. The government will provide intellectual, financial and environmental support.

Jiangxi Province unveiled a draft about developing Poyang Lake ecological tourism district recently. The district is composed of 10 sites chosen from the total 51 tourist attractions around Poyang Lake, the second biggest lake in China. The attractions were visited by 57.5 million tourists and earned 41.8 billion yuan (US$6.1 billion) last year. Tourism revenue accounted for 55 percent of the provincial total in 2009. The government plans to raise the ratio to 70 percent in 2020.
