The 2019 Guizhou winter ice and snow sports season will take place in Shuicheng, Liupanshui city, according to a press conference held by the Liupanshui city government on Dec 29.
Organized by national sports authorities and the Guizhou Provincial Sports Bureau, the seasonal event includes national ski competitions, and Liupanshui is also the only city in Southwest China to serve as a venue for 2019 World Snow Day.
To promote snow sports among youth, the organizing committee will also launch a series of student activities, including a campus snow photograph exhibition and a free skiing event, and will also issue 15,000 free tickets to students.
Since Liupanshui held its first tourism development conference in 2014, it has been focusing heavily on developing and transforming its tourism industry.
Skiing tourism has become an effective way for Liupanshui to alleviate poverty, as it has established four ice and snow towns that provide poverty-stricken families with many jobs and dividends from tourism revenue.
In 2017, Liupanshui received more than 30 million tourists and more than 20 billion yuan ($292.51 million) in tourism revenue. In the first three quarters of 2018, the city received more than 33 million tourists, with the total tourism revenue exceeding 26 billion yuan.
