The sixth batch of China's Historical and Cultural Counties (Villages) was recently announced by the Housing and Urban-rural Development Department and the National Antiques Bureau. A total of 178 counties (villages) were on the list, including Pingnan's Shuangxi village.
Shuangxi village is important because of its unique geographic location. It links eastern Fujian with northern Fujian.
Since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Pingnan's county government has been in Shuangxi village. It has many ancient trees and temples. It also boasts rich folk cultures, including the traditional Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and the more modern Chrysanthemum Festival.
Pingnan county has devoted a lot of energy to the preservation of its ancient architecture and the protection of its natural environment.
In September 2013, Zhenbei village in Pingnan was also listed as a national historical and cultural village.
