Discussion held on key elements of rural rejuvenation in the new era
Representatives at the provincial "two sessions" have given their views on how to modernize the agricultural sector in Northeast China's Jilin province during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, as part of the event's group discussion section.
Animal husbandry and farming are considered the foundations of agriculture in the province. Representative Ma Zhihua, pointing out that Jilin's contribution rate to national livestock breeding has reached 40 percent, suggested that the local government give full play to Jilin's favorable resources, formulate both mid- and long-term plans for development, and create indigenous brands for local agricultural products.
In addition, with total output value exceeding 140 billion yuan ($21 billion) in 2020, the cash crops sector has played a significant role in provincial GDP. Given that quality cash crop seeds are still hard to acquire - a fact which curbs agricultural profits - Representative Li Qiyun advocated the collection of special local varieties of cash crops, as well as the introduction of new types of cash crop fit for the local industry.
Representative Wu Xiuxia attached importance to organic food for its increasing popularity among citizens. Wu noted that more governmental support should be given in policies and finance to add new impetus for the green economy.
Meanwhile, Representative Xu Cheng advised building a socialized services system for agriculture, including a risk prevention and control mechanism, rural insurance institutions and so on.
