Jilin Party chief Bayanqolu urged Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture -- located in the Chinese northeastern province -- to put more focus on ridding itself of destitution and ensuring targeted and high-quality poverty reduction, on Jan 13.

The Party chief made his remarks during a discussion that was part of the third session of the 13th Jilin Provincial People's Congress, which opened the previous day in the capital of Changchun.

Eight deputies from Yanbian delivered reports during the discussion.

Bayanqolu said that over the past year, Yanbian had made great achievements in reducing penury.

He said that and in the new year, the prefecture should put more focus on areas such as housing and medical security and establish a long-term mechanism for stable poverty alleviation.

Poverty reduction work should be linked with rural revitalization and the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, the Party chief added.
