The Changbai Mountains national nature reserve covers an area of 190,000 hectares and is home to more than 2,400 plants, 500 vertebrates, and thousands of invertebrates, all of which are typical of animals and plants living in the north of Eurasia. The natural reserve joined the international Man and Biosphere protection network in 1980, and its management committee established the Changbai Mountain Natural History Museum in 1986 for scientific study, popularization and tourism. The museum features more than 1,500 plant and animal specimens, accounting for 60 percent of all treasures in the Changbai Mountains. It’s the biggest of its kind to focus on a specific region.
