The competition has four themes — traditional handicrafts, food, innovative and high-tech items and those related to scenic spots such as cultural sites. The deadline for collecting entries is July 30 and the awarding ceremony for winners will be held in mid-November.

Beijing TV Station will produce a four-episode documentary and a 90-minute show about the contest.
"Tourists always want to buy auspicious and lovely souvenirs that represent China. It's important to place your innovation and affection into your products. We can also develop some souvenirs related to Buddhist scriptures and Chinese characters," said Yao An, vice-head of Capital Museum, who delivered a speech at the event.
