For millions of Chinese studying English, Li Yang was like a godfather figure, with his admirable English proficiency and exhilarating self-confidence. But he has been in the shadow of domestic violence against his American wife Kim Lee since 2011. In February 2013, the couple’s high-profile divorce ended with Li's extensive property portfolio being forfeited as compensation. The court granted Lee properties worth more than 12 million yuan ($1.9 million) and custody of their three daughters.
