Gu's second lift however, improved the new mark to 136 kilograms, and the 19-year-old's third lift extended it to 139.

With a snatch of 102, Gu totalled 241, eclipsing the previous world mark of 240 by countrywoman by Li Wang in August 2003 at Bali, Indonesia.

"After Kameaim's lift I was under pressure but after overcoming her mark I thought I should go further and try for the overall record," Gu said. "I am pleased that all my strategies went according to plan."
