The reform of the Security Council, for example, should give more consideration to the representation of the developing countries, especially the African nations, he said.

"China's development, instead of hurting or threatening anyone, can only serve peace, stability and common prosperity in the world," said He when concluding his speech.

On the sidelines of the summit, Hu also held bilateral talks with other state leaders attending the event.

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday local time, Hu suggested the two sides work out co-operative plans and measures in key areas and on major projects to ensure progress in big projects concerning energy, investment and high-tech.

The two presidents agreed that both countries will work with other parties to achieve new progress in the ongoing Six-Party Talks aimed at resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Hu said Sino-Indian relations have been developing smoothly in the past few years, and are now faced with important opportunities for further development. Hu said China and India have declared 2006 as a friendship year for both countries.

Singh said developing a strategic partnership with China is important to both countries.

Earlier, Hu also met his Mozambican counterpart Armando Emilio Guebuza on the fringes of the summit. The two leaders agreed to further improve bilateral relations.
