Hu shared his views on the UN's development and reform at the plenary meeting of the United Nations Summit, with an audience of state leaders from more than 170 countries. "Peace, co-operation and development represent the main theme of our times," said Hu in a speech.

To realize common security, "all countries should join hands in coping with global threats" by upholding multilateralism, said the president.

The UN plays an irreplaceable role in international co-operation to ensure global security, said Hu, adding such a role can only be strengthened and must not be weakened.

"We should encourage and support the efforts to peacefully settle international disputes or conflicts through consultations and negotiations," he added.

Secondly, Hu suggested the international community upholds mutually beneficial co-operation to achieve common prosperity.

To build a harmonious world, countries around the globe should follow the spirit of inclusiveness, he suggested. "Diversity of civilizations is a basic feature of humanity and an important driving force behind human progress," said the president.

Touching on the reform of the UN, Hu suggested conducting it in an "active and prudent" manner.
